4.0 V8 Stripped Engine - block fitted with Ductile iron flanged liners

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to express my thanks for your prompt service in replacing the engine for my beloved Range Rover 4.0 SE.

The combination of your speed and efficiency and that of Kingsley Cross Country has ensured that my 'baby' is now purring like a good 'un.

My only regret is that you do not supply a badge to stick on the back so that everyone can see the quality as it passes them by!

Again many thanks,
Jak Haughton

4.6V8 ductile iron flanged linered block

Hi, We bought a 4.6 ltr cylinder block with ductile liners from you at the end of 2005. We fitted it in our Ford Popular Dragster and ran a best of  9.70 secs at 129 mph using super unleaded. For 2007 we changed to methanol and ran a best of 9.22 at 139.84 mph, which is as far as we know the fastest a Rover engined dragster has ever run the 1/4 mile without nitrous oxide assistance. For 2008 we are raising the compression with the hope of running high 8 seconds. Thanks for the great block. I have attached a picture.

4.0L V8 Stripped Engine - block fitted with Ductile iron flanged liners

The only delay in getting my V8 Discovery back on the road after the block cracked (at 164000-miles) was due to Land Rover's delays in supplying a new radiator. I drive my car for a living (between 20000 and 35000 miles a year) and I have a great team of engineers (Doug Dransfield, Stocksbridge , UK ) to maintain it. Frida, your knowledge of engines, the engineering team you have in your workshops and the phenomenal speed you had the engine delivered to Doug's (Thursday PM we spoke on the phone, Friday the engine was being checked and packaged, Monday Doug started work) is testament to a quality of service others can only strive to achieve – when will you start supplying radiators? A big THANK YOU to all at Turner Engineering, a great team effort!

Kind Regards,
Francis Thom ( Sheffield , UK )

Dear Frida,

Just a quick email to say thank you very much for arranging the new cylinder head to be shipped to Peru. We collected our Landy a few weeks ago from the mechanic and the engine is purring like a kitten! It starts on the first turn better than it ever did before. Thought you may like to see a picture of him in action in the desert in Peru last week.

2.5 Turbo Diesel stripped engine

Many thanks for the first class engine. Started first time, no oil or water leaks, no oil or water consumption and is very smooth & quiet. Fitting gasket set was spot on and running in oil was appreciated.

I work for the AA, having been in the trade all my life, and can say that this engine is not the usual "recon" available to the trade, smothered in an inch of black paint and with no record of workmanship. Having seen it, installed it with care & heard it, this is to me now a new engine.

Kind Regards

200TDI Diesel cylinder head gasflowed

Hi Frida
Just to let you know I have now got the head back in the car & on the road - great improvement!  I'd expected that gas-flowing would improve the top-end, but it's actually the smoothness of the engine's response which is really transformed.  Now I can't feel when the turbo kicks in, the lag and then sudden power-on is gone, now it just pulls smoothly all the way up the rev range - brilliant!

Thanks for all your work sorting the head out
Tony

Frida,

There are some suppliers that within five minutes of contacting them, give a warm feeling that tells you this transaction will go well. You're one of them. You did exactly what you said you'd do.

My engine has now done 1,000 miles, had an oil change at 500 and is running as sweet as a nut (how nice to get rid of that tappet clatter on startup!).

Thanks, Frida.

Stage1 lead free performance 2.25 head

Hello Richard and Frida this is a long overdue thank you for the head you supplied to me back in late December 2004 early January 2005. Just to say that the head performs brilliantly with an increase in Hp but more over a doubling of the torque output.

You may remember that myself and a colleague took part in the London to Dakar Rally raising over a thousand pounds for Macmillan Cancer relief. We came 35 from 59 entrants and beat several more modern four by fours to the finishing line and throughout in all conditions of cold and heat the head excelled and I cannot praise your product highly enough.

Thanks again for the great cylinder head

Ruby's Garage, Cornwall - 6th March 2006
4.6 V8 Petrol Engine, gasflowed heads, block fitted with Ductile iron flanged liners

A 1995 Range Rover 4.6 HSE (139.000 miles) was brought to us with overheating/coolant loss problems. Our diagnosis was cracked block but the customer asked for the cylinder heads to be removed to check the gaskets. No visible signs of failure could be found. Having dealt with Turner Engineering for many years we sought their advice.

Frida and Richard could not have been more helpful giving advice to both ourselves and directly to our customer. It was decided to install and exchange engine fitted with gasflowed heads and ductile liners to the block casting.

The engine arrived 72 hours after ordering and was extremely well presented. All gaskets needed were supplied along with two 5 litre cans of engine oil. It was spotlessly clean with clear concise instructions detailing almost any problem that could occur whilst rebuilding. Any other problems during the rebuild were quickly resolved over the phone by the staff at Turner Engineering with no hint of us ‘being a nuisance'. In fact they seemed pleased that we consulted with them rather than went ahead and got it wrong!

The fitting of this engine has transformed an otherwise tired vehicle. It now pulls crisply and cleanly from quite low revs giving the impression of a much larger engine under the bonnet than it actually is. Low down torque is vastly improved, with 70mph being achieved at 1700 rpm whilst just feathering the throttle pedal. Time will tell but we consider an improvement in fuel economy will also result.

Although not the cheapest on the market we consider this to be the only cure for the notorious V8 cracked block problem. The relative small extra charge for the fitting of gasflowed heads is well worth considering for the vast improvement it achieves.

Congratulations to Frida and Richard and all at Turner Engineering for an excellent product and superb customer service.

lead free 2.25 petrol head

Dear Mrs Turner, I felt that I must write to thank you for your help in solving the problems with my series Land Rover. The superbly remanufactured cylinder head arrived within 24hrs as promised and on inspection; the quality of the workmanship was impressive. On fitting the new head, the improvement was immediately noticeable. Gone is the lumpy tick over, the acceleration is better, the top speed higher and the fuel consumption seems to have improved.

These factors coupled with the all in price, the prompt service, the engineering quality and the friendly helpful advice , in my book make your company outstanding, many thanks.

Yours truly

3.9 V8 performance cylinder heads

Since fitting a pair of performance gasflowed cylinder heads to my own 3.9 V8 Classic Range Rover (1990) the overall performance has been transformed. Hill climbing noticeably improved and also improved fuel economy which justifies the extra cost. The engine performs willingly with less throttle input. The engine was fitted with a new stock camshaft and timing equipment at the same time and has covered 139.000 miles. I would not hesitate recommending the performance version to my customers.

Richard Brookman - 13th July 2005
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

Hi Frida

Just a note to thank you and your team for the excellent service I had from you recently when I purchased a Stage 1 cylinder head from you. From order to delivery was around 24 hours, and your courier collected my old unit within 24 hours of my call. Your response to me over the phone was knowledgeable, helpful and very professional.

The new head has now been in place for a week and has covered about 100 miles, so this is only an initial observation, but I am very pleased with the results. After fitting the head and a new carb, I turned it over with the coil disconnected for a few moments to get some oil pressure, and then tried to start it. It started almost before I had fully turned the key, and settled immediately to a steady idle. The engine is now smooth and quiet throughout the rev range. There has been no dramatic improvement in performance, but the vehicle pulls much better, and hills where I used to have to drop to third are now taken in top without loss of speed. Your advice to me that the Stage 1 head makes it feel like a bigger engine is absolutely correct. The only problem is that the increase in power now makes me realise how much I need an overdrive!

Many thanks again for excellent service and a brilliant product. I'm now looking forward to many miles of happy Landrovering. The Discovery is sulking because it hasn't been touched for a week.

All the best to all of you
Richard Brookman

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

Landy 90 1987 2.25. [ S Wales ]

Hello Turner Eng; just a few lines, regarding the gas flow head I purchased with you Sept 2004. For a landy I purchased Feb of this year from Brighton, it was in really nice condition for year on driving it on a test drive at Brighton I thought very good, drives well no oil leaks, quiet, let's go for it. So I parted with my money and off we go my wife following me back to s. Wales on the motorways it was really fast [on the flat] it had a transplant of a 2.25 as it was a diesel turbo in true life all the running gear was still turbo . But with this lump in front that could not pull granny of the urinal. So a few months of late nights in the garage trying to tweak it up and a lot of frayed tempers, it got a little better, but not good enough for the hills of S Wales I would stand there scratching my head wondering why I bought this load of rubbish . Mt wife thought I had left the country. Then I read about Turner gas flow heads still weary, I thought give them a call I told them the problem I was having. So a Mrs Turner ran me through the difference the head should make, ok I thought lets go for it. It was delivered the day after so I made a start. But still very weary, on finishing the job o/k lets see what happens fired it up hmmmm, o/k now how is it when I flick the switch for lpg. I start to smile lets get it out on the road still weary , up the hills down the hills not changing down a lot more smiles ,.; Frida I love you Glen [S Wales]

Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head.

Hi Frida,

Just a quick note to thank you for the speedy delivery and service regarding the supply of my new cylinder head. I successfully fitted it in a morning on Saturday and am very very pleased with the results.

It has transformed the vehicle and while a 109” 2 ¼ litre will never be the fastest thing in the world it now feels much more sprightly, keeps up with normal traffic and pulls strongly up hills throughout the rev range.

I will be in touch next week to arrange for my old head to be collected.

Many thanks

Dan Akrigg - 7th November 2003
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I recently bought one of your stage 1 gas flowed cylinder heads for my swb series 3 landrover and I wanted to let you know how well it is performing. Fitting was very easy and once everything was checked over the first thing that I noticed upon starting the engine was how well it started - just pull out the choke, turn the key and it fires up straight away. The second thing that I noticed was the sound - a much deeper, smoother noise comes from the vehicle as though a bigger engine has been fitted. The performance brings a smile to my face. The vehicle now pulls overdrive like it previously did without, and upon changing up through the gears as I come back on the throttle it leaps forwards. The improvement is particularly noticeable at low revs, where it pulls better than a Tdi, and responds to a blip on the throttle with eager acceleration. All in all the landrover is much more willing to do what is asked of it.

Thanks
Dan Akrigg

Lead free 2.25 petrol cylinder head/rocker set

Just a note to say how pleased I am with the Lead Free head I had from you for my Rover P4 80 in 2001, it doesnt seem that long ago. Since then the car has been driven to Sweden and Germany on continental tours and has covered about 6000 miles. The engine is very responsive, smooth and burns no oil on overrun. Your suggestion to fit the little valve caps on the valve stems has meant the clearances have hardly changed. Excellent value and Service. I always recommend yourselves if asked about replacement engines etc.

Oscar Kraan, Holland - 13th July 2003
2.5 n/a Diesel cylinder head gasflowed

(Oscar originally bought a complete all ancillary engine elsewhere in the UK)

A good engine is the heart of every terrain vehicle, and for a Land Rover you will naturally go to the country of birth.

The compression in the block is too low and after deliberating we decided to have the cylinder head reworked. On advice of friends we have this done by Turner Engineering in combination with a visit to Old Sodbury. Turner is the specialist in gasflowing the inlet and exhaust ports for extra torque. Complete rework of cylinder head, including gasflowing.

Because we really don't trust anything anymore and the cylinder head is removed anyway we decide to tackle the rest of the engine at the same time. New piston rings, honing the cylinder bores and check the crankshaft and bearings. After re assembling everything the engine sounds totally different, much quieter, no more rattling and on the test drive a very noticeable improvement in performance.

It appears we finally bought real air in the UK!

Now it remains for the gear box to be rebuilt and we can start enjoying our very special self built Land Rover 109 S2a from 1969!

Noel Clark - 3rd May 2003
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25
head

After purchasing and installing a new overdrive on my 1966 Series IIa 109" the lack of performance from the standard 7:1 CR 2.25 petrol engine became very evident, even the slightest gradient having an adverse effect on road speed. Having invested the money in the overdrive I wanted to increase the power of the engine enough to make the overdrive useable but did not want to sacrifice long term reliability.

Virtually all sources suggested the cylinder head as the place to start and after looking at information on various websites the information on the Turner Engineering site immediately struck a chord with me - BHP is largely irrelevant, torque is by far the most important characteristic to consider when upgrading any road vehicle engine. After telephoning Turner Engineering and having a very informative discussion with Frida Turner I decided to go for a Turner stage 1 8:1 CR performance unleaded head. This duly arrived the following day and with the assistance of a friend was fitted the day after.

I couldn't wait to try it on the road and the difference was immediately evident within 10 seconds of leaving my driveway. The engine felt so much more alive and the vehicle really wanted to go, I was very impressed. I then found a stretch of dual carriageway to see how happy the vehicle was in overdrive top on gradients - the area I badly wanted improved. I was not disappointed, gentle gradients were not noticeable and even moderate gradients were handled with ease. As time has gone on I've seen how far and I can push it and a hill that the vehicle had difficulty with in top gear no overdrive it will now climb in top gear with the overdrive engaged without labouring. In a nutshell it feels like someone has removed the 2.25 litre engine and fitted a bigger one! I can honestly say that this head was worth every penny and has opened my eyes to the fact that there is no need to spend huge amounts of money on upgrading everything in sight. Many thanks Turner Engineering.

East Coast Rover Co. USA
21st November 2002

For a number of years now we have exclusively used Turner Engineering 2.25 HP engines in our service work and restorations. We use these engines because of the high quality product, prompt delivery times and attention to detail that takes place in the build ups of these engines. The numerous Turner engines we have installed have all performed well, and we have had no warranty issues of any kind with our 2.25 engines since switching to Turner engines vs. the other suppliers we had sourced engines from. We even find that, as good as these engines are, they even save us money over doing rebuilds here in our own shop. We find our relationship with Turner to be a total win/win situation. We get excellent performance, no problems of any kind and happy customers that use phrases like "runs like a swiss watch" to describe our repairs when we use Turner engines. As the premiere restoration shop in the USA for Series Land Rovers, we only select world class products to make it into our award winning restorations, and our service work. Turner engines meet our exacting demands and have never let us down. We look forward to fitting many more.

Peter Comely - 5th November 2002
2.25 3MB Petrol stripped engine LFHP

LRO project vehicle Series IIA, registration NFC 314H, was originally purchased around ten years ago by Popular Classics magazine. Then after much use by LRO, mostly due to impending MoT failure, it was dismantled in 1999 for a complete rebuild. The petrol engine (with unknown mileage) was well worn and the only option was replacement. As the LRO project vehicles principle reason for existence is to provide stuff to write about in LRO, it was deemed a good idea to serialise the rebuild of the 2.25 motor in the workshop section of the magazine (September 1999-January 2000, five parts; plus installation in vehicle, Spring 2001). Not something many readers are likely to attempt, but, if every part of the rebuild was covered, then the correct procedures for each stage of the process could be detailed for reference. This series of features also made it clear just how much knowledge, access to quality parts, time and specialist equipment is needed, to rebuild an engine to the sort of standards that will ensure virtually indefinite reliability. It also serves to illustrate the financial considerations of attempting a rebuild yourself. ie. by the time you've sourced the parts and rebuilt the motor, how much less will it cost than buying a complete new engine in the first place?

Turner Engineering's reputation for quality and attention to detail, meant that it was the first name to be mentioned when the inevitability of a rebuild became apparent.

So, 4500 miles and nearly two years later how's it performing?

The 8.1 compression ratio, 'Stage 1', unleaded, gas flowed head is an optimization of the existing Land Rover set-up, rather than an out-and-out performance modification to create more horsepower. Compared to standard, with the Turner engine, there's a noticeable increase in acceleration. The standard Land Rover 2.25 petrol will also start to run out of steam up long hills, whereas even using a standard 36IV Zenith carb and Land Rover air filter, the Stage 1 Turner doesn't. In fact it takes a laden 750kg payload trailer to bring it back to the feel of a standard Land Rover set-up on hills. With the Turner motor, the trailer doesn't seem to make much difference to performance on the flat at all. I would imagine a motor like this would be a real advantage in a fully laden LWB or when towing, for instance, a horsebox. Standard servicing procedures have been religiously adhered to, and the only additions to the Turner motor are a Rocky Mountain spin-off oil filter and a Kenlowe fan. Ignition is standard points and distributor. Reliability has been 100%, whatever the weather. According to the speedo top speed is just off the clock - around 72mph. It'll cheerfully cruise at 60mph in fourth gear, although at this speed fuel consumption will drop to around 18mpg. In everyday use expect 20-22mpg.

What more can I say? So far a happy customer!

Arthur Haswell - 27th May 2002
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I bought one of your gasflowed heads for my Series 111 petrol (1981) in April 2002. For a while previously I had been debating how best to improve performance to give us a touring vehicle. I have just noticed the long thread from January titled Warning for Series Owners on LRE forum in which you debate the merits of the various schemes to improve performance. I wish I'd seen it when it was being written!

I feel I must write to tell you what a great job this new head is doing. The engine seemed quite perky before at low revs, but on hills and trying to accelerate on the flat above about 35MPH would hardly manage, although it could sit at about 65 if asked. I'd done almost no vehicle maintenance before buying the LR a year ago, and fitting the head is by far the largest job. However, it all went smoothly, and I am looking forward to taking the family touring and camping this year, cruising easily in a way we couldn't before. I intend to keep with standard fittings, as recommended by you. I want a vehicle that will last for many years. We'll be fitting good tyres (Michelin XPC) and an overdrive this week. Though we are working on a tight budget we feel that these sort of improvements will be cost effective in the long run.

All of which is to endorse your product. There is a particularly long hill out of Hexham which the poor beast couldn't manage except in screaming third gear. Now she storms up in fourth, accelerating to the top if we feel the need to show off and waste the petrol! The first thing we did when we'd fitted the new head was to try this hill - we were cheering all the way!

Best Wishes Arthur Haswell, Hexham, Northumberland

Andrew Gordon - January 2002
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

I have fitted or should I say I had Dunsfold Land Rovers fit a Turner stage 1 head to my early 90 2.25 5mb engine. This conversion has transformed the 90, it is difficult to explain but for starters it no longer slows on hills, it has more torque through the rev range and this is without getting into the second stage of the twin choke. If you run on LPG it is a must. The engine is also smoother and more responsive. This conversion will not make it a sports car but will make you keep up with the traffic with no effort. Tested on the motorway I can easily maintain 70 and my top speed has moved to 80mph +. Dunsfold LR also recommended the Turner head as very good. To help anybody with the decision my brother is a rally driver and has had all his rally cars converted to stage 1 or 2 heads as it does increase power and performance.

Adam Ward - 21st July 2001
2.5 Turbo Diesel stripped engine

Dear Sirs

After much deliberation I purchased a re-manufactured 2.5 Turbo Diesel engine from you in May. Having now done over 1000 miles I thought I should write to you and thank you not only for the excellent service I received when buying the engine but for the engine itself.

I originally wanted to replace my engine with a 200TDI however having spoken to you I was convinced to go for a new Turbo Diesel and can not thank you enough. My Land Rover is now like new, its smooth, quiet and accelerates effortlessly, have recently started to tow with it after running in and barely notice the trailer is on!

Thank you again for all your help. I also think I should mention Philip at Muddy Trax to whom like yourselves nothing was too much trouble and had my Land Rover back on the road in two days. If ever any of my colleagues find themselves in need of a new engine in the future I will be putting them straight on the phone to Turner Engineering undoubtedly the Rolls Royce of engine re-manufacturers.

Yours sincerely
Adam Ward

Chris Kite - 30th July 1998
Stage 1 lead free performance 2.25 head

Since fitting one of your high performance lead free heads to my S111 2.25 3MB engine, and now done seven thousand miles of trouble free motoring, I felt I should put pen to paper to congratulate you on your service.

The young lady who answered the phone was very friendly, polite and knowlegeable and is a credit to your company.

The product is excellent, I have gained better acceleration, top speed and mpg and at 9p per litre it will soon pay for its self.

I am extremely happy with the whole package and would not hesitate to recommend your company to anyone else who is looking to go lead free.

Once again very well done for both service and product and if you have a company sticker I would be only too pleased to attach one to my beloved Land Rover.

Keep up your excellent work.

Yours faithfully
Chris Kite

AT Service - 2nd April 1997
Stage1 lead free performance 2.25 head

Dear Sirs

I am just about to return my old Land Rover S111 cylinder head to you, as arranged by telephone this morning.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say how pleased I am with the results. The old cylinder head was responsible for a bit of oil smoke, but otherwise apparently satisfactory. I found results after fitting the remanufactued head to be every bit as good as I'd expected, if not more so. It really has transformed the performance of the old beast, as well as putting an end to a lot of smoke!

I hope I shan't need your services again in the foreseeable future (!), but would be happy to recommend your Company to other Land Rover owners whose vehicles are getting a bit tired.

Yours faithfully
Peter White (Proprietor)

Dear Mr Turner

Enclosed you will find my completed Installers Check Sheet for the new engine I purchased. Also I am sending several photographs of our restored 1957 Series One, ex Ministry of Supply, 7 passenger station wagon.

The new engine now has almost 700 miles on it. It had its first inspection last week, and I am totally delighted with it. I have been careful to run the engine under 50 miles per hour, all on country roads.

Please convey our thanks to everyone in the shop for producing such a first rate product.

2.25 3MB Diesel short engine

Dear Mr & Mrs Turner

Hereby I can tell you the engine was built into the LR and runs fine. I included a copy of the custom of customs agency documents. For the injector pump I did not receive them yet but as soon as they arrive I will send them to you.

Also included the checklist for the warranty. The old injector pump was sent to you on 11.2.92 and I hope it has arrived by now.

Many thanks for the excellent service and the nice reception. Another satisfied client!

Yours faithfully
Jan Verguts

Jim Allen - USA - Article LRO May 1991 - 2.25 3MB Petrol stripped engine - Stage 1 performance head fitted

Jim featured the engine he purchased for his own Land Rover. The engine was internally standard with the exception of the gasflowed cylinder head. Externally Jim had fitted luminition ignition, a free flowing exhaust system, a Pierce manifold and a Weber 28-32 DGV carburettor.

In my case, all the modifications have added up to a rip-snorting two and a quarter. Passing traffic is now possible and hill climbing on the highway is light years better than before. Hills that once required third or lower, now can be pulled in top gear at close to the speed limit. Top speed has increased well past 80mph because the rpm range and power curve is extended significantly. At this writing, there are 6247 miles on the Turner engine. Not one drop of oil has escaped from it. It's been smooth and quiet and maintains 50 pounds of oil pressure. After the initial valve adjustments, clearances have kept steady.

I chose Turner because I wanted a well built engine to use as a strong basis for a modified powerplant. I believe I got just what I wanted. My opinion is that it would be hard to find a more meticulous rebuilder.

2.25 3MB Petrol short engine/cylinder head

Dear Sirs

I enclose your Installer's Check list, completed as requested.

Thank you for forwarding the distributor drive dogs which I omitted to remove from my old engine. The new unit is running very sweetly, and I would like to take this opportunity of saying how impressed I was with both the trouble you took to satisfy my requirements, and the general standard of care and workmanship which clearly goes into your products. I shall not hesitate to recommend your service to anyone requiring an exchange Rover engine.

Yours faithfully
PC Watts
